Time to plan for Keep Space for Peace week

October 4 to 13, 2007

Download the proposed poster for the 2007 Keep Space for Peace Week.

Invitations to participate and resources for your planning will soon be posted on the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space web site. WILPF is again co-sponsoring the week with Global Network.

WILPF Reaching Critical Will now has newly updated fact sheets on the aerospace and other corporations promoting and profiting from space militarization. Find the military base or contractor near you. Reaching Critical Will also has extensive information on UN space treaties and Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space.

Resources and ideas are also available from the strategy session of the annual Global Network conference in Darmstadt in March 2007. Eight WILPF members from Britain, Norway and the US attended, including Linda Richards and Carol Urner from the US WILPF DISARM committee. Read the report of Bruce Gagnon on the Darmstadt conference. Scroll down for photos of the meetings and demonstrations. The WILPF report is also available. Read a Stars and Stripes account of the GN demonstration at US August-Euler Air field in Darmstadt, including interviews of WILPF members Linda Richards and Helen John.

Additional resources are available in the report of the WILPF side event on War in Space or Life on Earth: the Choice is Ours presented at the UN Commission on Sustainable Development, May 3, 2007.

Read the reports on 2006 Keep Space for Peace week submitted by WILPF to UNOOSA and UNCOPUOS, the agencies responsible for monitoring the UN space treaties. Reports from US WILPF Branches are there, along with those from Norway WILPF and other organizations from around the world.

These same UN agencies also sponsor UN World Space Week every year from October 4 to 10 to promote the 1967 Outer Space Treaty and the peaceful uses of space for the benefit of all humankind. The World Space Week Association is the NGO responsible for facilitating the week. Ironically the NGO is in turn co-sponsored by major corporations involved in space militarization like Lockheed Martin, EADS, and Alliant ATK. WILPF has also sent reports to WSWA in the hope of entering into dialogue on demilitarizing space, and the need for new and stronger treaties on banning space weapons and Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space.
